Justin Bieber Is First Male Artist to Debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Twice

With the No. 1 starts of DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One” and his “What Do You Mean?,” he joins Britney Spears and Mariah Carey as the only acts with multiple No. 1 launches.

DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One,” featuring a star-studded group of collaborators – Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne – stormed in at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week (dated May 20). The accomplishment, beyond marking Khaled’s first leader on the list, lifts Bieber into an exclusive club: He’s now the first male soloist, and third act overall, to debut at No. 1 with multiple titles.

Bieber previously entered atop the Hot 100 with “What Do You Mean?” The lead single from his Purpose album opened at the apex on the chart dated Sept. 19, 2015, becoming his first No. 1 on the list. (“One” is his fourth Hot 100 leader overall.)

With “Mean” and “One,” the pop superstar ties Britney Spears’ total of chart-topping starts, which she earned with “3” in 2009 and “Hold It Against Me” in 2011. Bieber and Spears trail only Mariah Carey’s record hat trick of No. 1 debuts, achieved with “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, both in 1995, and “Honey” in 1997. Together, Bieber, Carey and Spears account for seven of the 28 songs (25 percent) that have debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Notably, Bieber has come up one spot short of an additional No. 1 debut on three separate occasions. In 2012, “Boyfriend,” the lead single from his second studio album, Believe, roared in at No. 2 on the Hot 100 behind fun.’s “We Are Young,” featuring Janelle Monae.

Three years later, “Sorry,” the Purpose follow-up to “Mean,” also entered at the runner-up rank, blocked from the summit by the concurrent No. 1 entrance of Adele’s “Hello.” Likewise, Major Lazer’s “Cold Water,” which features Bieber and MO, also began at No. 2, barred by Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” featuring Sean Paul. Of the three No. 2 debuts, one track, “Sorry,” eventually ascended to the top, earning a three-week reign in 2016.
