Chart Beat Podcast: 'Despacito' & 'I'm the One' Are This Year's 'Blurred Lines' & 'Get Lucky'

Justin Bieber is featured on what should be two of this summer’s biggest songs, just like Pharrell in 2013. Plus, ABC Radio’s Andrea Dresdale recaps covering the Billboard Music Awards and previews more summer hits.

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what’s on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, Gary and Trevor note how Justin Bieber’s summer is shaping up to mirror Pharrell Williams’ chart heat in summer 2013, as Bieber spends a third week atop the Billboard Hot 100 as featured on Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” and holds at No. 3 also as a guest on DJ Khaled’s former No. 1 “I’m the One,” additionally featuring Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne. Four years ago, Pharrell deftly demonstrated that an act can saturate summer music, as featured on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (with T.I.) and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Those collabs finished as the Nos. 1 and 3 top songs of the summer of 2013, respectively. Just after Memorial Day, could Bieber be on his way to similarly steamy success?
